River Tavern in Chester, CT, the next place on my community spotlight posts, was a fun place to dine! From the moment I walked into the small, but airy establishment under the blue awnings, it was a win in my book. One that you need to put on your list of must visits ASAP! River Tavern is located in the quaint downtown center of Chester and offers a unique and unexpected dining experience to their guests. A fun menu, great cocktails, and beers, and a great location. After visiting this diamond, I did a little research to find that it was also one of the first restaurants to be recognized as a farm-to-table establishment, which only ups the appeal even more.
The River Tavern Ambiance
A very tiny place tucked away in the cute line of shops and other restaurants make this place almost easy to overlook as a must visit, but once I entered the door, it was easy to be enticed and feel the comfort the coziness provided. Wood lined walls, pillows tucked away in the corners, ambient lighting, and picturesque windows provides guests with a modern but romantic atmosphere. Children are also welcome here, on Sundays kids are half price, but I would venture away from taking them on a busy evening.
Locally sourced food is the highlight of the ever changing menu and offers innovative choices that caused me to have a hard time choosing an entree. I went with a Spicy Thai Shrimp bowl in the appetizer section and a jalapeno margarita (okay, maybe two jalapeno margaritas), which were both so delicious! The shrimp were enormous and paired well with the explosion of Asian flavors. My husband had the Soltl Farm Beef Burger, which was a great choice as well! The cocktails probably should have their own heading in this post, or perhaps a separate blog– they were that good! The menu as I write this blog was altered (in a little over a week since my visit) and offers choices that I really want to try, like the grilled Louisiana shrimp with crispy white polenta + Cajun cream sauce… hmm another trip is in order!
After our delicious and fun early dinner, my husband and I ventured out to enjoy a nice stroll along the streets and stumbled upon a cute little ice cream shop, a fun green space that would be great for a picnic, and lots of cute shops that I need to visit another day.
The River Tavern is definitely a must visit as well as the surrounding town of Chester. Don’t forget to make reservations, The River Tavern fills up fast on Friday and Saturday evenings and were even busy when we were there on a late Sunday afternoon. Enjoy and let me know what you think of your visit, I would love to hear from you!
